On Friday March 15th, Central Saint Martins welcomed back John Galliano!!!
So, why was John in school? 1 Granary spoke to Willie Walters, who said, “John was especially invited to look at the works of the nineteen 2nd Year Womenswear students with the highest marks on the Galliano Project. The project is in its 6th year. This year’s brief was set by John on the theme of the paintings of Edward Hopper.” He looked through sketchbooks, research and final garments of students and gave his personal feedback to those lucky nineteen. The rest of the 2nd year fashion kids also attended the crit.
Alexis Roche, Elisa Palomino, John Galliano, Natalie Gibson and Willie Walters together on the balcony of the CSM building.
Quadruple British Fashion Designer of the Year (1987,1994,1995 and 1997) and simply one of the most famous CSM fashion graduates created quite a buzz! It was fun to watch how fashion students exchanged smiles and looks of disbelief as their all-time fashion hero was casually walking down the fashion studio hallways, accompanied by Alexis Roche and our tutors Elisa Palomino, Natalie Gibson, Howard Tangye and Willie Walters. No need to mention that John looked fabulous.
Thanks to Elisa, 1 Granary had the luck of meeting John. We spoke to him on the terrace and here is what he told us of his experience of visiting the school: “It feels great and there is so much energy around. I am quite impressed by the building.” And not even in our wildest dreams we would’ve ever thought that he would add: “I’m a fan of your blog!” It all felt like a surreal fashion dream. But kids, dreams do come true!
And the coolest thing was that when John was leaving, 1 Granary’s Seena Shamardi, 1st year FdM fashion student, screamed out loud: “JOHN, WE LOVE YOU!!!” And like in a happy ending, John turned around and screamed back: “I love you too!”
This could only happen at Central Saint Martins and we are still over the moon!
